While most kitchens and living rooms are usually restricted to their own spaces, modern house plans are doing away with walls and solitary rooms in favor of a more open plan for both kitchens and living areas. Establishing this effect, however, requires careful planning and knowledge on how the two spaces will connect.
Home Remodeling Center, your kitchen remodeling expert, discusses how to establish an open plan for the kitchen and living room.
Kitchen-Dining Room Plan
There are two ways to establish a more open floor plan between the kitchen and dining room. The first involves tearing down the walls that separate the two and simply uniting the two spaces as one. It’s not necessary to change the flooring of the two areas to unite them. Leave them as they are and use other elements to break up the floor plan. For example: low hanging lights installed at the center of the unified space integrate the two areas together.
The second method is installing an interior window of pass-through. This is a more cost-effective kitchen remodeling method to unite the two spaces together without completely tearing down major walls. While there’s still half a wall, the kitchen or pass-through breaks up the floor plan and connects the two spaces with one another.
Kitchen-Living Room Plan
An open plan that incorporates both the kitchen and living room is trickier to do as the two spaces aren’t as integrated compared with the kitchen and dining room. Modern homes already have an integrated kitchen and living room while traditional homes need some reworking first.
The best way to go about this is to remove the wall that separates the kitchen from the living room and establish an L-shaped plan. The base of the L will be where the living room is while the length is where the kitchen should be.
Integrate the two spaces by leaving a bare area between the two that serves as the main thoroughfare or connecting area. This results in a smaller area for the living room furniture but with a more open and seamless floor plan that connects it to the kitchen and dining area.
